Why the Maldives?

Few destinations in the world deliver on their reputation quite like the Maldives. The photographs don't lie — the water really is that colour, the overwater villas really do sit above that lagoon, and the silence really is that complete. It is one of the few places where the setting alone justifies the journey.

But the Maldives is also one of the most misunderstood destinations in luxury travel. With over 170 resorts spread across a vast archipelago, choosing the right one — the right atoll, the right island size, the right style — makes an enormous difference to the experience. A poorly chosen resort in the Maldives is still beautiful. The right resort is unforgettable.

This guide covers everything you need to plan a Maldives trip correctly: which atolls to choose, when to go, what to expect, and which resorts are genuinely worth the investment.

Which Atoll Should You Choose?

The Maldives spans roughly 900km from north to south. The atoll you choose determines your transfer time from Malé, the style of resort available, and in some cases the marine life you'll encounter. Here are the four most important atolls for luxury travellers:

Most Popular

North Malé Atoll

The closest atoll to the airport — many resorts are reachable by speedboat in 20–45 minutes, making it the easiest choice for shorter trips or connections.

  • No seaplane required
  • Best for: short stays, easy connections
  • Key resorts: Gili Lankanfushi, Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa
Best Marine Life

Baa Atoll

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Home to Hanifaru Bay — one of the world's most remarkable manta feeding sites. Requires a seaplane transfer (~30 min).

  • Best for: diving, snorkelling, nature
  • Manta rays: June–November
  • Key resorts: Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Amilla Maldives
Most Secluded

Noonu Atoll

Further north and further from the crowds. Larger lagoons, fewer resorts, and a sense of genuine remoteness. Seaplane transfer (~45 min).

  • Best for: privacy, honeymooners
  • Quieter, more exclusive feel
  • Key resorts: Velaa Private Island, Kudadoo Maldives Private Island
Best Value

South Malé Atoll

Just south of the airport — fast speedboat transfers and slightly lower price points than North Malé, with equally beautiful lagoons.

  • Best for: value-conscious luxury
  • Shorter speedboat transfers
  • Key resorts: Anantara Veli, Centara Grand
✈️
Seaplane vs speedboat: Seaplanes operate daylight hours only and must be booked in advance through your resort. If you arrive on a late-night flight, you'll need an overnight in Malé or at a transit hotel before your seaplane the next morning. Speedboat resorts have no such restriction and are accessible at any hour — a practical advantage for long-haul travellers.

When to Go

The Maldives has two seasons — dry (north-east monsoon, November to April) and wet (south-west monsoon, May to October). "Wet season" is something of a misnomer: it simply means a higher chance of brief afternoon showers, not perpetual rain.

Period Weather Sea Conditions Marine Highlights Crowds & Price
Nov – Apr Dry Season Calm, clear Whale sharks (Nov–May), reef fish Peak — book 6+ months ahead
Dec – Jan Best Weather Flat calm Excellent visibility in peak season Highest demand, highest prices
May – Oct Shoulder / Wet Some rougher days Manta rays at Hanifaru Bay (Jun–Nov) Typically better value than peak season, fewer crowds
Jun – Nov Manta Season Variable Best manta ray aggregations of the year Good value, some resort closures
🐋
Whale shark season: Whale sharks are present year-round but most reliably spotted November through May around South Ari Atoll. For the best chance of an encounter, choose a resort in this area and ask your marine team to monitor sightings daily.

How Long Should You Stay?

The most common mistake in the Maldives is not staying long enough. Many travellers arrive after a long-haul flight, spend a day recovering, and find themselves checking out just as they've settled in.

Our recommendations based on trip type:

A 3-night stay is rarely satisfying — the journey is too significant for a short visit, and the daily rate of luxury resorts means the fixed costs (flights, transfers) represent a disproportionate share of the total budget.

How to Choose the Right Resort

With over 170 resorts in the Maldives, the decision can feel overwhelming. These are the four questions that matter most:

1. How long is the transfer?

If you're arriving late at night, a seaplane resort means an overnight in Malé before you can check in. Speedboat resorts (North and South Malé Atoll) are accessible any time. For a 5-night trip where every day counts, a speedboat resort maximises your time.

2. What's the island size?

Smaller islands feel more intimate but can feel restrictive after a few days. Larger islands — like Reethi Rah or Landaa Giraavaru — offer more space to explore, better beaches on multiple sides, and more dining variety. First-timers to the Maldives generally prefer larger islands.

3. Overwater villa or beach villa?

Overwater villas are iconic and most people come for them — the glass floors, the steps into the lagoon, the silence. But beach villas are often larger, offer more privacy from neighbouring villas, and are easier with children. Many guests do a combination: arrive into a beach villa, upgrade to overwater for the final nights.

4. What matters most to you?

Marine life and diving → Baa Atoll. Ultra-privacy → Noonu Atoll. Convenience → North Malé Atoll. Budget-friendly → Samann Grand. Families → Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru. Honeymoon → Velaa Private Island or Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru.

Practical Information

Getting There

Fly into Velana International Airport (MLE), Malé. Major direct connections include Emirates (Dubai), Singapore Airlines (Singapore), SriLankan Airlines (Colombo), and British Airways (Colombo connection). From Australia, connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Dubai. Flight time from Sydney is approximately 11–13 hours with one stop.

Transfers

Your resort arranges all transfers once they have your flight details. Seaplane transfers operate daylight hours only — typically 6am to 5:30pm. Speedboat transfers run around the clock. For night arrivals connecting to seaplane resorts, most properties can arrange an airport transit hotel at minimal cost.

Currency & Payments

The Maldivian Rufiyaa is the local currency, but all luxury resorts operate entirely in USD. Credit cards are accepted everywhere on-resort. Carry USD cash for tips on excursions and local island visits — though tipping is not required or expected at the resort level.

Packing Essentials

Visas

Most nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival at Velana International Airport, provided you meet standard entry requirements — a confirmed hotel booking, a return or onward ticket, and sufficient funds for your stay. No advance visa application is required for most passport holders, but entry is not guaranteed and immigration officers may verify these conditions on arrival.

Travellers are also required to complete the IMUGA Traveller Declaration (the Maldives' official digital health and travel declaration) before departure. Check imuga.immigration.gov.mv for the latest requirements, and verify current entry rules with your government's travel advisory before you fly.
