โ† Back to Itineraries

There are private island resorts throughout the Pacific, and then there is Kokomo. On Yaukuve Levu island in the Kadavu Group โ€” 100 kilometres south of Nadi and accessible only by helicopter โ€” Kokomo sits directly above the Great Astrolabe Reef, the fourth largest barrier reef in the world, a UNESCO-recognised marine environment of extraordinary biological richness.

Three days here constitutes a complete experience: the house reef, the full reef system, the genuine Fijian community on Kadavu, and the particular quality of silence that only true seclusion provides. This is not a compromise itinerary. It is precisely the right amount of time to understand why Kokomo is considered one of the finest private island resorts in the Pacific.

Day 1
Arrive Nadi โ€” Helicopter to Kokomo โ€” House Reef Kadavu, Kokomo Island

Fly into Nadi International Airport (NAN) โ€” Fiji's main gateway, connected to Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific hubs. From Nadi, a helicopter transfer to Kokomo covers 100 kilometres of open Pacific in approximately 40 minutes, crossing the Beqa Lagoon and descending into the Kadavu Group โ€” a cluster of largely undeveloped islands whose forested interiors and coral-fringed shores have changed very little in the past century.

Your villa โ€” overwater or beachfront โ€” will have been prepared and waiting. Kokomo operates with a high staff-to-guest ratio; your arrival is genuinely unhurried and genuinely warm. The welcome kava ceremony with staff, conducted on the beach in the early evening, is not staged for tourists โ€” it is the way Fijians have greeted guests for centuries, and at Kokomo it retains its authenticity completely.

Day 2
Great Astrolabe Reef & Kadavu Village Visit Great Astrolabe Reef / Kadavu

The Great Astrolabe Reef is the reason Kokomo exists where it does. The reef system extends 100 kilometres around the Kadavu Group and supports an extraordinary marine ecosystem โ€” healthy hard and soft corals, an abundance of fish species, and a shark population of notable diversity. Grey reef sharks and white tip reef sharks are common throughout the reef; hammerheads are encountered at depth; nurse sharks rest on sandy patches in the shallower sections. The presence of sharks is not incidental โ€” it is a measure of the reef's exceptional health.

Even non-divers encounter a world of genuine wonder at snorkelling depth. The water clarity on the Great Astrolabe, particularly in the dry season, is exceptional โ€” visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres.

๐Ÿ
Kokomo's Great Astrolabe Reef is among the Pacific's finest dive sites. Even non-divers are rewarded by extraordinary snorkelling in crystal water โ€” the reef begins at breathable depth in several sections, and the visibility is exceptional throughout the dry season. The village visit to Kadavu is the most genuine cultural experience in Fiji โ€” prepare for it with the same openness you'd bring to any meaningful human exchange.

Day 3
Morning Paddle, Coconut Breakfast & Departure Kokomo Island

The final morning at Kokomo belongs entirely to the island itself. Kayak or paddleboard around the shoreline โ€” the water is calm in the early hours, the reef visible below through remarkable clarity, the forest-covered hillside of the island rising above on the other side. There is a particular quality to early morning light in the South Pacific that is unlike anywhere else on Earth: warm, clear, and entirely generous.

Breakfast on the beach โ€” fresh coconut, fruit, and whatever the kitchen has prepared โ€” is followed by a departure helicopter back to Nadi. The transfer back is, in its own way, a final extraordinary moment: looking down at Kokomo's beach and reef growing smaller below, the Pacific spreading in every direction, before the familiar world reasserts itself.

Practical Information

Getting to Kokomo: Fly into Nadi International Airport (NAN). Kokomo operates its own helicopter transfer service โ€” approximately 40 minutes each way. The resort coordinates departure times around international flight schedules; confirm on booking. A domestic flight alternative exists to Kavala Bay airstrip in Kadavu, followed by a boat transfer, though the helicopter is the preferred routing.

Best time to visit: April through October corresponds to Fiji's dry season โ€” lower humidity, calmer seas, and optimal diving conditions on the Great Astrolabe Reef. December through March is cyclone season; the risk is generally manageable but the weather is more unpredictable.

Diving certification: Kokomo's dive operation can conduct PADI Open Water certification courses for guests who are not yet qualified. If you plan to dive the Great Astrolabe, certification in advance is recommended โ€” it frees your island time entirely for the reef rather than pool training.

Currency: Fijian Dollar (FJD). Kokomo operates as an all-inclusive or room-only resort โ€” confirm which inclusions apply at time of booking. Credit cards are accepted; cash is rarely necessary on the island itself.
