Patagonia operates on its own terms. The weather shifts within minutes, the landscape is unlike anywhere else on earth, and the sheer scale of Torres del Paine National Park demands respect from the moment you arrive. This three-day itinerary distils the park's most extraordinary experiences into a long weekend β€” centred on the iconic Mirador Las Torres hike and anchored at explora Patagonia, the finest lodge in the park.

A short trip to Patagonia is not a compromise. Done correctly β€” the right base, the right guides, the right timing β€” three days in Torres del Paine is one of the most intensely beautiful long weekends available anywhere in the world.

🌦
Patagonia's weather: The climate changes dramatically every few hours β€” layer up and expect rain, sun, and wind on the same day. explora's guides manage this expertly, reading conditions and adjusting routes in real time. It is part of the experience, not an obstacle to it.

Day 1
Arrival & First Steps in the Park Punta Arenas β†’ Torres del Paine

Fly into Punta Arenas (PMC) or Puerto Natales (TPP) β€” most international connections route through Santiago. From Punta Arenas the private transfer to explora takes approximately three hours, crossing the windswept steppe with the first glimpses of the Paine Massif appearing on the horizon. It is a transfer worth savouring.

Day 2
Mirador Las Torres β€” The Iconic Hike Torres del Paine

This is why you came to Patagonia. The hike to Mirador Las Torres β€” the viewpoint at the base of the three extraordinary granite monoliths β€” is the single most iconic walk in South America. An 8-hour round trip that earns its reward completely.

The final approach is steep and involves scrambling over a boulder field, but the moment the turquoise glacial lake appears at the base of the towers β€” the towers themselves rising sheer for hundreds of metres above β€” is one of those moments that simply cannot be overstated. Every step of the ascent is justified by what you find at the top.

Torres del Paine

Torres del Paine Guided Trek

A fully guided full-day trek to the base of the towers with an expert local guide β€” including park entry, packed lunch, and transport. The most iconic hike in South America, done properly.

Day 3
Valle del FrancΓ©s or Grey Glacier & Departure Torres del Paine β†’ Puerto Natales

The final morning offers a choice: the Valle del FrancΓ©s β€” a valley of hanging glaciers with condors overhead and the full amphitheatre of the Paine Massif β€” or a shorter, lower hike toward Grey Glacier for a first encounter with Patagonian ice. Your guide will recommend based on weather and how your legs feel after Day 2.

Punta Arenas

Punta Arenas City & Strait of Magellan Tour

If you have time before or after the park, Punta Arenas β€” gateway to Chilean Patagonia and Antarctica β€” is worth exploring. The Nao Victoria replica ship and Magallanes Museum are extraordinary windows into the Age of Exploration.

🧳
What to pack: Waterproof jacket, warm mid-layer, thermal base layer, hiking poles (rentable in Puerto Natales), and sturdy waterproof boots. Layers that pack down small are essential. Patagonia's wind is the real variable β€” a windproof outer shell is non-negotiable.

Practical Information

Getting there: Fly Santiago (SCL) to Punta Arenas (PMC) β€” approximately 3.5 hours. LATAM and Sky Airline operate this route. Alternatively fly to Puerto Natales (TPP) on smaller aircraft from Punta Arenas. explora arranges private transfers from both airports.

Best season: October to March (austral summer) is the only practical window for hiking. Peak season is December to February β€” book explora six to twelve months ahead. November and March offer fewer visitors with only marginally more unpredictable weather.

Fitness level: The Mirador Las Torres hike (8 hours, 1,100m elevation gain) requires a reasonable level of fitness. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable with a long day on your feet over uneven terrain.

Currency: Chilean pesos (CLP) for incidentals. explora is fully all-inclusive, so cash needs are minimal inside the park.
