Rio de Janeiro occupies one of the most extraordinary natural settings of any city on earth. The Atlantic peaks erupt from the ocean floor to form Sugarloaf and the Corcovado, while Ipanema and Copacabana stretch out between them — some of the most famous beaches in the world, alive with music, football, and the endlessly watchable theatre of Carioca daily life.

Six days gives you the time to absorb both sides of Rio: the iconic landmarks and the neighbourhood life, the beaches and the forest, the samba and the silence of a dawn summit. This is a city that rewards those who go slowly enough to see it properly.

Best time to visit: December–March is summer — Rio Carnival falls in February or March (book 12+ months ahead for hotels and Sambadrome tickets). April–June offers warm, sunny weather with far fewer crowds and significantly lower rates. July–August is winter (still 25°C) — the quietest time to visit and excellent value.
Days 1 – 2

Recommended Stay · Copacabana
Belmond Copacabana Palace
Rio's most iconic address since 1923, the white Art Deco palace on Copacabana beach has hosted royalty, presidents, and every notable traveller who has passed through Rio. Safety in Rio: Rio requires common sense — use Uber rather than street taxis, keep valuables out of sight on the beach, don't walk alone at night in unfamiliar neighbourhoods. The tourist areas (Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana, Santa Teresa, Botafogo) are busy and generally safe. Your hotel concierge is the best source of current advice.

Practical Information

Getting around: Uber is safe, reliable and inexpensive — use it consistently. The metro covers the South Zone and downtown. Avoid metered taxis hailed off the street.

Language: Portuguese — Spanish won't help much. Learn basic greetings: "Olá" (hello), "Obrigado/a" (thank you), "Com licença" (excuse me). Cariocas respond warmly to any attempt.

Beach culture: Rent a cadeira (chair) and guarda-sol (parasol) from the beach vendors — a few reals and you have a setup for the day. The vendors also bring cold coconuts and snacks to you.

Carnival: If visiting during Carnival (February–March), book hotels and Sambadrome tickets at least 12 months ahead. The official parade is extraordinary but the street blocos (block parties) are equally remarkable and free.

Currency: Brazilian real (BRL). Cards accepted widely in tourist areas. ATMs at international airports are reliable.
